About time. In this blog, all attention to one of the crown jewels of the well-known Holset turbochargers: the unique Holset VG Turbo, especially for the commercial vehicle market. Efficient, flexible, in a special way always powerful and clearly more durable.
Holset is a brand name of parent company Cummins. There, they have been guaranteeing quality and well-considered innovations in durability and reliability for over a hundred years. Both are essential in modern commercial diesel engines. Especially the heavier engines used in transport, from heavy duty trucks to pick-up trucks, plus all the places where power and longevity count: mining, construction, industry, diesel generators to generate power. How important those engines are, they also realise at Cummins; they have every confidence in MasterTurbo, long-time official 'Platinum Distributor' for Holset turbos. |
Nice to know: Holset is a contraction of the two surnames of two early British pioneers of efficient diesel engines: Brian Holmes and Paul Croset. That duo had been making good turbochargers since 1957; an official partnership with the Swiss inventor of the turbo, engineer Alfred Büchi. Together, they accounted for mountains of expertise.
The researchers and developers at Cummins Turbo Technologies have taken the VGT principle to perfection. The Holset VG is so unique in the first place because the vanes slide axially. As a result, they have fewer moving parts and therefore fewer wear points. All good for the reliability and durability of this Holset technology. VG (the abbreviation of Variable Geometry) has all kinds of beneficial effects in practice. The most obvious advantage is that a turbocharger equipped with a VG design can adjust itself to the engine speed! Truly 'variable', in other words. |
Many turbodiesel engines have been using these smart VG turbochargers for years; in petrol engines, they are now on the rise. Not only is it good news for cost control, it is also good for the environment: VG technology offers the most fuel-efficient way to drive exhaust gas recirculation (better known as EGR) on short routes, which is used to lower NOx levels. In other words, less nitrogen oxides as emissions from your commercial vehicle.
At Cummins, they describe their regular distributor MasterTurbo as 'reliable, professional and efficient'. At turbo specialist MasterTurbo, they are naturally quite a bit proud of that.
After all, A-brand Holset has been researching how a turbocharger can best do its job for over 60 years. In recent years, Holset has also been supplying excellent remanufactured turbos, also known as Reman (remanufactured) and as good as new. Holset started doing so because competitors' Reman Turbo results were disappointing in tests. With a Holset Reman Turbo, you can count on an affordable alternative that has just as much reliability of a 'real' Holset turbo.
