For Centrica in Uithoorn, MasterTurbo started the assignment to overhaul seven turbochargers last month. Centrica is an international company that helps its clients with economically sustainable and environmentally friendly energy.
The client is future-oriented and highly innovative. The overhaul of a turbocharger instead of buying a new one fits in perfectly with sustainable, price-conscious and environmentally friendly business management.
Like Centrica, we are always looking for solutions to problems and opportunities for improvement. Determining the damage and defects of a turbocharger is therefore an important part of the overhaul. For Centrica we are overhauling seven turbochargers of the brands Garrett and Schwitzer.
The parts of the first turbo are marked. At the end of the overhaul process, our specialist is able to find the original location of each part, such as an insert that has to fall in exactly the same place for the turbo to work perfectly.
After marking, all parts are taken apart. The turbine shaft and bearing housing are carefully cleaned, blasted and brushed and look like new. Now every part, whether small or large, is checked in detail for cracks, bulges and other damage.
In one of the turbochargers, small pieces of the turbine wheel appear to have broken off causing the turbo to malfunction. However, the bearing housing turns out not to have any damage and is reused. A standard procedure in turbo overhaul is to replace the bearing kit, because the bearings are hypersensitive and wear out quickly. In our warehouse we always have a bearing kit in stock so it can be replaced at any time. An original kit from BorgWarner is used for this job.
After all turbochargers have been checked and the problems have been identified, a quotation is drawn up. After the customer's acceptance, the overhaul process is resumed. In our next blog you will read about the diagnoses of the other six turbochargers and the repairs.
