Have you read our new magazine, "Passion for Parts," yet? This blog summarizes the report on MasterTurbo—a customer of MasterTurbo, for example, a garage or overhaul company with a turbo problem. When nothing is available, they order a new turbocharger from an established brand such as BorgWarner, Holset, Garrett, Mitsubishi, BMTS, or IHI. Another good alternative, also affordable and enormously reliable, is a fully remanufactured turbocharger that has undergone a day of solid work by the turbo specialists at MasterTurbo.
Egbert de Groot, Sales Manager at MasterTurbo, and revision specialist Arjan explain how it works and what you, as a customer, can expect from your reborn turbocharger. A tip of the hat: a ReMan turbocharger that leaves the MasterTurbo workshop works perfectly again and has passed all kinds of quality checks with flying colors!
MasterTurbo is a sister company of Wilmink Engine Parts. In 1998, they made a wise decision: to make turbochargers a specialization. It led to the founding of an independent company that could focus entirely on turbo technology. That technology is becoming increasingly advanced, and the role of the modern turbocharger is growing. This is partly because turbochargers are no longer used only in cars, trucks, and ships but also in "stand-alone" machines with combustion engines, such as emergency generators and combined heat and power plants.
Before a remanufactured turbocharger can bear the "ReMan by MasterTurbo" designation, it undergoes several steps in the repair process. After all, the result must be at least 'as good as new'. MasterTurbo is one of the few specialists in the Netherlands who master this to perfection. It starts with thoroughly cleaning the advanced Bio-Circle "washing machine" to remove oil, dirt, and grease. Then, another treatment in the blasting machine. Only then can you properly assess the operation of a turbocharger; they know from experience at MasterTurbo. The cleaned turbocharger is completely disassembled so that even the most minor details can be examined. In case of possible damage, we consult with the customer about the approach, of course, with an estimate of the costs. Some damage can be repaired. This is enormous precision work, sometimes at a tenth of a millimeter.
An example of what the professionals at MasterTurbo encounter is a damaged turbine wheel. This is a fundamental problem because the turbine wheel is the heart of a turbocharger. It drives the compressor wheel, which draws in air from outside to compress it. That, in fact, is the essence of how a turbocharger works. The compressor wheel spins around at staggering speeds, averaging 150,000 rpm. Even the slightest deviation or unevenness can cause the turbocharger to stop functioning optimally.
The symptoms sometimes take time to be recognizable to beginners. Minor scratches near the shaft of the turbine wheel? For MasterTurbo, this is the signal to repair or replace the part. That repair is truly a craft. After grinding down to the tenth millimeter, Arjan from MasterTurbo puts in oversized bearings and immediately looks at the possible cause of the scratches. The oil is often contaminated; of course, this cause is addressed immediately in consultation with the turbocharger user.
Once the turbocharger has been neatly reassembled after all the steps in the overhaul process and found to be OK, the real test follows. Test runs on the "Flowbench" - the device that allows MasterTurbo to measure the power output of a turbocharger precisely. Its memory now contains the 'ideal report' figures and performance graphs of some 2,000 different turbochargers.
From all A-brands, from modest 1.3-liter turbochargers to impressive 12.5-liter powerhouses for heavy trucks and ships. Finally, every remanufactured turbocharger must be rebalanced. All efforts would have been in vain with a turbocharger out of balance.
If haste is required, MasterTurbo takes that into account as much as possible. It is known that fast delivery can be important for many customers. A stalled machine that stops a production line or a harvester in the agricultural sector that cannot be used. These are significant expenses for customers. In the most urgent cases, you don't have to wait for the overhaul of your "own" turbocharger. MasterTurbo has 2,000 different turbochargers (original and ReMan) ready to go. These can be put to work the next day!
He advises: "Once you've found the right turbocharger with us, save yourself the trouble of endless online shopping for matching nuts and bolts to assemble it yourself. MasterTurbo takes a lot of work off your hands with complete gasket sets and assembly kits, put together especially for your application. This way, you can immediately get to work flawlessly, and the cleverly overhauled turbocharger will do its job optimally!"
