In the third part of the turbo defects series, we look at damage and defects to the turbo (parts). In this blog you will also read more about the symptoms, causes and consequences of these problems and our specialists will again provide solutions and tips for maintenance.
Compared to the previous blog, the defects and the problem are a little more complicated. These problems can have different and multiple symptoms, so there is no one-size-fits-all solution. In this blog we will therefore look at the cause and solution for each problem. We recommend that you always contact MasterTurbo in the event of damage or a defect.

Defects or damage to bearings are often caused by insufficient lubrication or dirty oil. One of the causes of this problem may be failure to use the right engine oil, for example one with the wrong temperature resistance or a too high viscosity. Another possible cause is the presence of foreign particles in the oil. This can cause blockages, seizures or damage, so components are deteriorated or also become damaged.
After determining the problem of dirty or clogged bearings, changing the oil filter and replenishing the oil is necessary. The turbo must also be examined and a turbo overhaul cannot be avoided. If this is not done, the risk of further damage is high.
The compressor wheel is one of the most important parts of the turbo and can be damaged or malfunction due to insufficient lubrication, dirty oil, damage from foreign particles or overspeed.
If heavy soiling and deposits can be seen on the compressor wheel, soiled parts must be cleaned. Failure to do so may result in greater damage.
Damage to the turbo can have various causes. It is very important to identify and eliminate the damage as soon as possible to prevent further defects.
A broken bypass valve can have a major impact on the operation of your turbo and reduce performance. The bypass valve and control unit of the turbo air pressure must be inspected.
A worn or blocked variable nozzle ring is often caused by foreign particles or contaminated oil. Replacement or overhaul of the turbo is the solution.
A defective actuator can lead to very serious damage to the turbo and the engine block. The actuator or turbo should therefore be replaced as soon as possible.
In case of a defective or damaged turbo (or parts), we recommend you to contact our specialists. They can examine the turbo for you, determine the problem and repair or overhaul it where necessary. Naturally we do the work after consultation with and after approval by the customer. In addition, on-time maintenance is an important factor in avoiding these repairs and costs.
In a case of damage lubrication can play a major role. Always use the specified and approved engine oil when servicing and follow the manufacturer's intervals. We also recommend choosing a reliable oil filter of good quality.
Foreign particles can occur for various reasons and it is important to be careful during fitting to prevent this from happening. Checks during fitting must therefore be carried out carefully. When replacing parts in the case of contaminated oil, the intercooler and air filter must also be replaced, and cleaning various parts is important here.
Short trips and cold temperatures can have a bad effect on the life of your turbo and engine components. Taking these causes into account can reduce damage and defects in the long term. Furthermore, early detection of the aforementioned symptoms can prevent major damage and repair costs.
The abovementioned defects, symptoms, causes and solutions can be found in our troubleshooting table. You can obviously also send an e-mail to our specialists for personal and specific advice.
